Mini Missions: ARISS x Estes Rockets

Grades 2-12; 175 min.

Topics Covered

Communication, Collaboration, Map Reading, Critical Thinking

Overview

Rockets are exciting, but communication is mission critical. This lesson immerses students in how astronauts, mission controllers, and emergency responders rely on clear, disciplined radio communication to solve real problems using a system called ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station).

Standards

K-2-ETS1-1 Engineering Design

Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.

3-PS2-1 Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions

Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object.

5-PS2-1 Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions

Support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down.

MS-ETS1-1 Engineering Design

Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.

HS-PS2-1 Motion and Stability: Forces and Interactions

Analyze data to support the claim that Newton’s second law of motion describes the mathematical relationship among the net force on a macroscopic object, its mass, and its acceleration.
