Slippery Slope

In this unit, students will analyze launch data to identify how slope changes on the flight path of a model rocket. They will answer the question, “How is slope represented in a model rocket launch?” The unit plan includes:

  • Common Core math standards for grades 7 & 8
  • Slide presentations to teach types of slope and slope calculations
  • Practice problems for calculating slope from graphs
  • Real-world math applications to understand slope as the rocket’s velocity

An Occasion for an Equation

In this unit, students will use algebraic equations to make sense of what effect different masses have on the velocity and acceleration of different model rockets. They will answer the question, “How are algebraic equations used to calculate model rocket acceleration?”
The unit plan includes:

  • Common Core math standards for grades 6, 7, & 8
  • Slide presentations to teach algebraic expressions and equations
  • Practice problems for simplifying algebraic expressions and solving algebraic equations from word problems and data
  • Real-world math applications using velocity and acceleration of model rockets
